Improving our Habitat

Introduction

As part of the UK national biodiversity strategy and action plan Ew PC is working on a number of projects to improve our local habitat.  This page will be updated over the coming months with the details and information on how you can get involved. If you would like to volunteer or have an idea please get in touch: clerk@ewshotpc.com,  cllr.jennings@ewshotpc.com or cllr.morgan-jones@ewshotpc.com .

Working with Surrey Wildlife Trust

Our Strategy:

1. Discover and understand the full extent of our parish biodiversity (https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/home).

2. Support Surrey and Hampshire Wildlife Trusts, in particular helping with Heathland to support their key objectives.

3. Enhance and improve:

3.1 The Areas of ancient woodland.

3.2 Our hedgerows across the parish to enhance the movement of birds, small mammals, reptiles, and insects across the parish in all directions whilst also increasing plant biodiversity.

What’s Going On?

  • Ancient Woodland: We now have 4 landowners working with the Ancient Woodland Trust to improve their woodland.
  • Hedgerows. With Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) we have agreed to create a network of hedgerows (a dormouse superhighway) that connects the majority the ancient woodland areas. The aim is to enable the free movement of dormice from one area of woodland to another.  Green shows where this capability already exist and red hedgerows that may need to be improved to create arboreal routes required by these rodents.
